A Strange Lawsuit at the Elite Dhaka Club: Is Election the Real Motive?

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court. On August 26, a lawsuit was suddenly filed there. The accused include four top officials of the elite Dhaka Club, including its President, Shameem Hossain. The allegations involve a former employee's unpaid dues of BDT 3.75 lakh and death threats. On the surface, it appears to be a simple recovery of dues case. However, a closer look at the case documents reveals several glaring inconsistencies.

Inconsistency number one: By law, the exclusive legal jurisdiction to resolve any dispute regarding a worker's salary or dues lies with the Labor Court. When the Labor Inspector himself had already reviewed the matter, why bypass the Labor Court and file this case in a regular criminal court? Allegations have surfaced that the Editors Guild—an organization comprising a section of pro-Awami Dhaka newspaper editors associated with the past fascist government—is pulling the strings behind this lawsuit.

Inconsistency number two: The timing of the lawsuit. Why did an employee terminated back in January suddenly become hyperactive in the last week of August after a long eight-month gap? And under whose direction was the entire board of directors, along with the President, jointly named as accused through a complex regular court procedure? Is there merely an employee's dues issue behind this ordinary lawsuit, or is it being orchestrated by an invisible hand?

The real picture behind the scenes becomes crystal clear when looking at the Dhaka Club calendar. The election for the club's new term is scheduled for September 5. And a deep conspiracy has unfolded centered around this upcoming election.

A source within the Dhaka Club suggests that the real origin of this case lies in last year's election. In June 2025, Shameem Hossain secured a landslide victory for the presidency by obtaining 683 votes, defeating the editor of Daily Sangbad, Altamash Kabir, by a massive margin. Did this legal trap stem from the resentment of that defeat?

Sources confirm that this lawsuit is being weaponized to demean the current successful leadership in the eyes of general members and to keep them entangled in legal battles ahead of the September 5 election. This comes as Altamash Kabir runs for candidacy once again in the upcoming election. The defeated faction is pulling the strings from behind the scenes using a former employee's financial grievance as a shield. Their ultimate goal is to seize control of the Dhaka Club leadership by winning the election by any means necessary.
